Gallery statement

This body of work examines the internal joys and tensions of family life through the exchange of commonplace family photos and allegorical tradition. Rather than present these relationships as single compositions, they have been improvised into machines with moving parts. This approach attempts to express family intimacy in the form of a manufactured product with commercial appeal.

This series is comprised of four mechanisms, which use motors to alternate images of family members with mythological and religious subjects. The images are derived from photographs, which were rendered in pastel and reproduced as enlarged C-Prints. The prints were then cut into sections and fixed to both sides of the panels. Rotating at minute-long intervals, the panels reveal the “fragments” of original drawings in variable contexts as they relate to one another.
