Gallery statement

The nine paintings from this series are called “Appearances”. The conceptual allegory of these pieces can be expressed by comparing each painting with a theatrical performance. Every play presents various layers of information, which can cause a viewer to feel excitement, intrigue, irritation, or misconception.

All basic colors of the spectrum are used in every painting from the series; however, each composition draws attention to specific colors. There are six characters involved in each composition. All of these colors are equally represented in the background, until one of the characters assumes “the leading role”, by entering a particular color field.

Two “supporting roles” function by drawing attention to two other colors. The colors, which are revealed by the supporting characters, are components of the dominant color, as shown in basic color theories. The remaining characters occupy three fields of brown, which present the result of blending each pair of opposite colors in the spectrum. The gray areas in composition express a balance of neutrality, which is disturbed by a black or white segment of a character.
